Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin is consistently ranked among the top five courses in Asia, and based on multiple visits I have no reason to dispute that ranking. Phil Ryan's 2006 design sits among granite outcrops with water features that are genuinely integrated into the strategy rather than decorating the margins.
The conditioning is extraordinary — fairways that hold approach shots, greens that are fast without being unfair, rough that penalises without burying. Every shot has a clear risk-reward calculation, and the course rewards golfers who think before they swing rather than golfers who swing well and then think.
At approximately £120 per round including cart and caddie, it's a bargain by any international standard. A comparable course in Europe would charge £200 to £250. Add the 28°C dry-season temperatures and you understand why clients who discover Hua Hin tend to come back.
Signature hole
Par-3 16th, 200 yards, island green
"An island green surrounded by water on all sides. In the dry season wind, this hole plays to a different number than the yardage card suggests. The caddie always knows the real number. Ask them."
