Muthaiga Golf Club

Muthaiga Golf Club is the oldest golf club in East Africa — founded 1913 — and members who have been coming here since before independence give it the atmosphere of a colonial institution that has quietly adapted to three generations of social change without losing its essential character. The clubhouse smells of leather and old wood in the way that only very old clubhouses do.
The course plays at 5,700 feet above sea level, which adds roughly 10% to ball flight and catches everyone off guard on the first tee. The parkland layout is not technically challenging by international standards, but it's well-maintained, atmospheric, and perfectly placed as the opening round of the East Africa circuit before you move into the safari segment.
At approximately $120 USD for international visitors, it's excellent value for what it offers: a genuinely historic African golf experience as part of a broader journey.
Signature hole
Par-4 4th, 380 yards, jacaranda-lined
"In October and November, the jacaranda trees on both sides of the fairway are in full purple bloom. The altitude makes the approach play shorter than the yardage suggests. A memorable hole in an underrated setting."
