Wallasey Golf Club, Wirral
ABOUT THE COURSE Wallasey Golf Club on The Wirral is the birthplace of the Stableford points scoring system. Today it is a fantastic links course with glorious views out to sea. Member Dr Frank Barney Gorton Stableford created the Stableford system out of frustration with the bogey system. The strong winds at Wallasey made nonsense of this style of scoring when players were unable to reach the greens of the long par 4s in regulation. Wallasey held the first Stableford competition on 16 May 1932 and it was an instant success. Subject to many improvements since it first opened in 1891, three new holes, designed by Donald Steel, were introduced for play in 2004.
