Champ de Bataille Golf Club, Normandy

Champ de Bataille is the best golf course in Normandy and one of the most beautiful in France. The course is laid out in thick pine forests on land that was once the scene of a medieval battle – hence the name which translates as “Battlefield”. Now the battle is far less dangerous but victory just as glorious as you conquer a mixture of tight and generous fairways. The first hole is deceptively simple but then the real test begins with hole after hole of challenging golf. It’s a clever design which requires the full range of shot-making if you are going to score well. It’s a course you could play many, many times and still have a smile on your face. Adjacent to the course is the actual chateau which is well worth a pre- or post-round tour of the interior and gardens. Owned by Jacques Garcia – a premier interior designer - Chateau de Champ de Bataille is dedicated to artefacts from the 17th- and 18th-centuries and the gardens are arguably the finest in France created in the last century.
