Overview
Cliff-top championship golf 4.5 hours from the UK, with shoulder-season prices that make Portugal look expensive.
Most UK golfers have never played Aphrodite Hills, which is precisely why it belongs on this trip. Designed by Cabell Robinson and perched above a limestone gorge near Paphos, it routinely ranks among Europe’s best-conditioned courses and hosts the PGA National licence for good reason. Pair it with Minthis — Donald Steel’s 1994 design through a 12th-century monastery estate at 550 metres elevation — and Secret Valley’s dramatic gorge par-3, and you have a week that outperforms the Algarve on value by roughly 20 percent.
Who this is for
The smart alternative to the Algarve — similar climate, lower prices, shorter queues, and Aphrodite Hills will challenge any handicap. Ideal for groups who want a destination that feels upscale without the Quinta do Lago price tag. Less suited to those who prioritise brand-name cachet over actual golf quality.

The Journey
Day by Day
Arrival in Paphos
Paphos, Cyprus
The flight is 4 hours 30 minutes from London. By the time you clear arrivals at Paphos International, the light is golden and there are carob trees as far as you can see. Your private transfer takes you the 20 minutes to Aphrodite Hills. Check in, walk the clifftop above the gorge, and get your bearings. The 7th tee is visible from the hotel terrace — you will understand tomorrow why this hole gets talked about.

Aphrodite Hills — First Round
Kouklia, Paphos
Morning tee time to avoid peak heat. The course plays 6,928 yards from the tips across a landscape of olive and carob trees, with the 7th hole — a par-3 played across a 130-metre natural limestone gorge — the moment everyone photographs. Buggies come with GPS. Afternoon by the pool or in the academy if you want to work on something before the week progresses.

Minthis Golf Club
Tsada, Paphos
A 25-minute drive into the foothills takes you to Minthis at 550 metres above sea level — cool enough to walk even in October. Donald Steel’s 1994 design winds through ancient olive groves, past a working 12th-century monastery and over ravines. The par-3 15th is the only island green in Cyprus; the par-3 2nd sets the tone early with a two-tiered offset green flanked by bunkers. This is a tighter, more demanding test than Aphrodite Hills.

Rest Day — Paphos & the Coast
Paphos area
Your legs will thank you. Paphos Old Town is 20 minutes away and worth a morning: the harbour, the Tombs of the Kings UNESCO site, and Petra tou Romiou (the birthplace of Aphrodite, if you believe that sort of thing). Afternoon back at the resort. This is also the day for the pool, the spa, or just reading something. Golf weeks without a rest day are brutal; this one has one built in.

Secret Valley Golf Resort
Kouklia, Paphos
Secret Valley sits 18 km east of Paphos off the A6, redesigned in 2013 and a two-time winner of Best Golf Course in Cyprus. At 5,700 metres par 71, it plays shorter than Aphrodite Hills but punishes loose shots through narrow fairways and well-placed hazards. The 12th hole — a par-3 over a natural gorge with brightly coloured rock formations — is the moment of the round. Book an early tee time; the morning shadows through the valley walls are worth arriving for.

Aphrodite Hills — Second Round
Kouklia, Paphos
A second round on the PGA National layout plays very differently once you know it. This is the day to go low, or at least go for pins you avoided on day two. Evening gala dinner at the resort with your group. The Cypriot wine is good, the meze is better, and the golf conversation will be honest by this point in the week.

When to Go
Average temperature & rainfall — Cyprus
Cyprus is genuinely playable 12 months a year, but April to June and September to November are the sweet spots — 22–28°C, courses in top condition, and the island is not overwhelmed with tourists. July and August are extremely hot (35–38°C); early morning tee times are essential. Winters are mild and nearly always dry.
