Mauritius golf: what nobody tells you

The courses are extraordinary. But it's the twenty minutes between the 18th green and the first drink that most people forget to plan.

I've been sending people to Mauritius for fifteen years. The number one regret is not about the golf or the hotel. It's about the transfers.

Mauritius is small — roughly the size of Oxfordshire — but the roads are terrible. If your hotel is in Bel Ombre and your tee time is at Belle Mare, you're looking at 90 minutes each way.

Belle Mare Plage's Links Course is, without qualification, the most beautiful golf I've played in my life. Still in my top three, ahead of Augusta.

Heritage Golf Club plays through the estate's remaining sugar cane — a colonial landscape unlike any other course setting.

Always hire a caddie at Belle Mare. The caddie fee is €35. The birdie on 14 is priceless.
