Portugal Spain Algarve Costa del Sol Comparison Europe The Dormie Edit

Portugal vs Spain for golf: which should you choose?

The definitive head-to-head from someone who has played both extensively. The answer is not what most people expect.

I play both regularly. I send clients to both. Here is my honest assessment.

Portugal wins on course quality per pound spent. The Algarve — specifically the Golden Triangle of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and San Lorenzo — offers courses that are genuinely world-class, in excellent condition year-round, at green fees that are fair rather than rapacious. Monte Rei, 90 minutes east, is the best Nicklaus design in Europe.

Spain wins on iconic status. Valderrama is the greatest course in continental Europe. It has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Volvo Masters, and the WGC American Express Championship. Playing it is a bucket-list experience that Portugal simply does not have an equivalent to.

Weather: both are excellent for golf. Algarve averages 300 days of sunshine. The Costa del Sol is comparable. The Algarve's January to March can be cooler (15–18°C) than the Costa del Sol (slightly warmer microclimatically), but both are playable year-round. Neither destination is 'better' on weather.

Value: Portugal is better value at every price point. The same money buys a better hotel, better courses, and better service in the Algarve than on the Costa del Sol. This is partly because the Costa del Sol has sustained premium pricing for longer and partly because the Algarve's hotel stock has been continuously upgraded over the past decade.

Non-golfing partner: this is where Spain edges ahead, specifically Marbella. The combination of beach, culture, nightlife, and restaurant quality in Marbella is, in my view, slightly stronger than anything the Algarve offers. If your partner doesn't golf, Marbella is the recommendation.

My recommendation by golfer type: First golf holiday abroad → Portugal (easier logistics, more forgiving courses, better value). Society trip of 10+ → Portugal for value, Spain if the group wants Valderrama as the centrepiece. Bucket list course → Spain (Valderrama). Best all-round week → Portugal.

The combination trip: five nights Algarve, three nights Costa del Sol works beautifully as a 9-night itinerary. Golf the Algarve classics first, then cross into Andalucía for Valderrama and Sotogrande. I build this regularly. It is one of our most popular itineraries.
