Rory McIlroy stood on the 18th tee needing a birdie to win the Turkish Airlines Open here. He made it. I have tried to birdie the 18th at PGA Sultan for fifteen years and it will not let me.

The course is a proper tournament layout — long, demanding, and designed to separate field from leaders over four rounds. The par-5 18th wraps around a lake in a way that makes the aggressive second shot both possible and likely to end in the water. The European Tour uses it precisely because it produces drama.

For society groups who want to play a course they've seen on television, PGA Sultan is the best combination of media recognition and accessibility in Turkey. Non-professionals find it hard and enjoyable. Single-figure handicappers find it genuinely difficult.

Signature hole

Par-5 18th, 556 yards, lakeside finale

"Second shot over the lake to a green cut into the bank. Conservative play: lay up, wedge, two putts. Aggressive play: three-wood at the green hoping the ball stops on the bank. Rory made it. Most don't."
